Safety is a key part of any commercial business. Maintaining a positive culture of safety can ensure your business is able to operate much more smoothly and efficiently. That commitment must extend to all parts of your building, including the commercial sectional and rolling doors that you use in your facility.

Owning a commercial facility means paying attention to every aspect, including safety. Let’s review the basics of commercial door safety inspections, including why they are necessary.

What Does a Commercial Door Safety Inspection Consist Of?

When a commercial door safety inspector visits your place of business, they will thoroughly inspect your commercial doors. This inspection will consist of:

Step 1. Visual Inspection

The first step is to conduct a visual inspection of the door in question. That includes checking over the hardware for any visible wear and tear, examining the track assembly to ensure everything is attached properly and there is no damage, inspecting the rollers for straightness and tightness, and seeing if the cables are still in good condition.

The inspector will also look at the spring assembly to see if there are any broken or damaged springs. Broken springs are a massive problem for commercial doors, so this is a vital part of the process.

Finally, they will make sure all necessary parts are properly lubricated and tightened as needed to ensure the most efficient possible operation for your door.

Step 2. Testing the Operation

Once the visual inspection has been completed, it comes time to test the operation of your doors. These tests may reveal further problems that were not noticed during the visual check, such as issues with the opener or motor.

The inspector will operate the door to a fully open position and then back to the fully closed position. They’ll watch for smooth operation and listen for any strange noises that might indicate a problem. The test also lets them ensure the door opens fully and remains in place, and that it closes properly without any gaps on the floor.

Step 3. Testing Safety Devices

It should come as no shock that in a commercial door safety inspection, testing the safety devices is a crucial aspect. These devices include the photo eye sensor or the stopping/reversing bottom edge that stops the door closing if there is an obstruction. If your door does not have these features, it may instead require constant pressure on the button to operate.

If these devices do not work as intended, your doors will require immediate servicing to prevent potential damage or injury.

Why Safety Inspections and Maintenance Are Necessary

Doors that are built to be safe will stay that way, but only if they are properly inspected and maintained. With the heavy daily usage that comes with being a door in a commercial facility, wear and tear can accumulate quickly, which leads to degraded performance and, therefore, degraded safety.

Safety inspections allow an experienced technician to find problems caused by damage, avoiding catastrophic failure and safety issues. Ensuring your facility maintains high safety standards means you’re not only avoiding the risks that come from letting safety fall by the wayside, but you’re also helping your employees and customers feel more comfortable and confident. Showing that you care about safety shows that you care about other aspects of your business too.

Employees who feel more confident are more efficient workers and customers who feel more comfortable are more likely to return. Whether you operate a warehouse where they need to load and unload materials from a delivery truck or a retail space that hosts many customers, safety is always of the utmost importance for your bottom line.

Risks of Non-compliance

Commercial door safety inspections are also a part of ensuring your building adheres to your local safety guidelines and regulations. Failure to maintain a proper commercial door safety inspection schedule can put everyone in the facility at risk. Commercial doors are often used as fire breaks in the event of an emergency, allowing occupants extra time to escape. If they’re damaged, that can lead to serious consequences.

Additionally, you may find yourself facing fines or even potential closure, especially if you have a history of non-compliance. Conducting regular inspections and maintenance means your building is up to code and operating safely.
