Commercial Doors from Overseas at YVR Airport

In June 2015, Creative Door's Vancouver branch was challenged with an exciting project at Vancouver International Airport's Airside Operations building. While most industrial buildings have one to five commercial doors, the Airside Operations Building, which houses all emergency and maintenance vehicles for airside operations, required a grand total of thirty-three.

"Due to the quantity and size of the doors, our team selected a stacking door manufactured by Butzbach Doors in Germany," says Greg Lund, commercial project manager/scheduler at Creative Door's Vancouver branch. "The stacking capability of the doors is a space-saver, and the fibreglass panels flood the inside of the building with natural light."

The first of its kind to be installed in North America, the Creative Door Services team worked with the German manufacturer to seamlessly install each door.

"The biggest challenge was that we had never seen or worked with a door of this calibre before," says Lund. "But it certainly wasn't the only challenge we faced."

In addition to a long lead time, as the doors travelled by boat from Germany to Canada, the location of the job site also required consideration. The Airside Operations Building is located in a highly secure area in the middle of an airplane runway, and each member of the Creative Door team required security clearance prior to entering the site.

"All of the hurdles were well worth it," says Lund. "The building is now operational and aesthetically pleasing but most importantly, we achieved our client's vision for the project."
