Edmonton's largest transit facility, the Centennial Garage, has been taking the pressure off the city's three existing, overcrowded terminals since April 2010. The 300,000 sq. ft. facility houses over 300 buses and, with a constant flow of traffic entering and exiting, the Edmonton Transit System needed doors that could keep up.
Getting Creative
To meet the demands of this high-traffic facility, the Centennial Garage needed a number of basic access and fire doors. Since the facility is outfitted with a fuel bay, fire doors were crucial in the event of a fire or explosion. It was also essential that the doors open and close rapidly, require little maintenance and have a quick turnaround time for repairs.
The Door
From Creative Door's large collection of products, the team selected and installed four high-speed rubber doors at access points throughout the facility. The doors, which can open and close within seconds, are also equipped with windows for added safety as buses enter and exit the terminal. If a bus does bump into one of the Richard-Wilcox Sectional Insulated Steel Doors Model T175 6x4.3 meter doors, the system can be reset and the doors put back on their rails in only 15 minutes.
In this installation, the Wayne Dalton Rolling Steel Fire Doors also stood out. Mounted inside the fuel bay and measuring a massive 10.973 meters wide and 4.27 meters high, the rolling steel fire doors are the largest Creative Door has ever worked with.
Delivering Results
Heralded as a blueprint for future transit garage designs, the new doors for Centennial Garage are changing the way the Edmonton Transit System operates. With the help of Creative Door and new premium doors, the terminal is more efficient than ever, and, thanks to Edmonton Transit System's safety procedures, the fire doors have yet to be used (2017).
