3 Garage Door Dilemmas: Get the Simple Fix

When your garage door stops functioning correctly, it can often cost you more than just unnecessary stress if the problems aren't addressed. Sometimes, a quick fix will do the trick. Tackling the top three most common garage door dilemmas could help save you time and money.

1. Remote Control Malfunction

If your garage door remote stops working, the solution may be as simple as replacing the batteries or moving the remote to a different location in your vehicle to help it transmit a stronger signal. If all else fails, try replacing the energy efficient bulbs in your garage door opener with traditional incandescent light bulbs. Energy efficient bulbs emit frequencies that often interfere with garage door sensors.

2. Failure to Close

When your garage door struggles to close, the photocell eye lenses may be dirty or out of alignment. These sensors are located on both sides of the garage door and project an invisible beam across the bottom of the opening. If anything is in its path, the garage door will not close. Use a clean cloth and carefully wipe off the lenses to remove any unwanted dirt. If this doesn't solve the problem, the lenses may be out of alignment and must be adjusted to ensure that both are positioned straight across facing each other. Pivot the sensors slightly by hand and use a level to check that they are horizontally aligned.

3. Free Falling Door

Worn out extension springs can cause a garage door to slam to the ground – a habit that will not only damage the door, but also pose as a hazard to you and your family. Extension springs are under extreme stress as they work to balance the weight of the door when it's raised or lowered. Inspecting these springs for wear and replacing those that appear distended or have gaps between the coils ensures that your garage door will continue to function safely.
