Creative Door Tackles a Larger-Than-Life Preventative Maintenance Project

In August 2016, Creative Door’s Edmonton branch executed an in-depth and rigorous preventative maintenance project at the DOW Chemical plant located in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta.

A producer of plastics, chemicals, and agricultural products, the Fort Saskatchewan DOW Chemical site is one of Canada’s largest petrochemical facilities. Over a two-month period, Creative Door worked to ensure the reliable operation of onsite commercial doors and operators by assessing each individual door to ensure it was operating at its best.

“The scope of this preventative maintenance project was unlike any our branch had previously worked on,” says Matt Crawford, commercial service sales at Creative Door’s Edmonton branch. “We individually assessed and categorized a total of 246 doors – a process that involved documenting the size, serial number, operator, voltage, and horsepower of each door so that at the end of the project, we were able to provide a thorough evaluation of the work that needed to be done.”

The scope of the project was not the only challenge that the team encountered.

“When you’re working in a chemical plant, there are many additional factors that come into play,” says Matt. “With every move you make, you need to be conscious of your surroundings and abide by the facility’s safety regulations.”

In addition to abiding by these regulations, the team took several other precautions. Each team member was equipped with the appropriate safety gear and participated in training to obtain permits, allowing them to access different parts of the site.

Now that the evaluation has been completed, DOW and Creative Door will work together to service and repair all of the garage doors and operators on site. Over time, this will help to prevent a malfunctioning commercial door from impacting workflow at the plants, and it will give the client peace of mind that it’s providing a safe workplace for its employees.

“It’s important for commercial and industrial operations to invest in regular preventative maintenance,” says Matt. “People walk and drive through these doors several times a day., One failure could result in a major operations issue or injury.”
