Expert Tips for Painting Your Residential Gate

If you want to increase the security and curb appeal of your home, a driveway gate can make a beautiful addition your property. However, it can quickly become an eyesore without the proper upkeep.

A fresh coat of paint is a simple way to protect your gate from the elements, cover up chips in the paint and generally keep your gate in good condition. Here’s what you need to know to make your gate look as good as new.

When to Paint A Driveway Gate

To ensure satisfactory results, you need to paint your gate when the weather is favourable. Rain can damage fresh paint up to three days after you apply it, so wait for a period when there’s no rain in the forecast for at least four days in a row. You should also avoid painting on a windy day, as this will increase the amount of dirt, insects and debris that get stuck in the wet paint. Please also remember to check with your manufacturer's warranty to ensure painting your gate will not negate the warranty. How To Paint A Wrought Iron Gate

Over time, exposure to the elements can leave your wrought iron gate rusty and pitted. Fortunately, painting the metal is an effective way to protect your investment and give it a fresh look. Here are the steps to follow:

  • Prepare the area. Lay out old sheets or a large drop cloth beneath the gate to keep paint drips off your driveway. You might also want to cover nearby shrubs, grass, and other surfaces if you plan to paint your gate using a spray gun.
  • Clean the gates. Remove caked-on mud, dried leaves, and other grime using a scrub brush and a mixture of warm water and dish soap. This will give you a clean surface to work on and make it easier to spot rust or damage. Allow the gate to dry before you continue.
  • Sand the surface. Use a wire brush or an electric sander to remove old paint and patches of rust. Note that you don’t need to scrub down to the bare metal. Simply clear away loose flakes and rough edges to create a smooth surface. When you’re done, wipe down the gate with a damp cloth and let it dry completely.
  • Apply a primer. This will help the paint adhere to the metal and prevent rust stains from bleeding through the paint. Opt for a primer with rust inhibitors to further prevent the onset and spread of rust. You can use a roller or spray gun for quick application, but a paint brush may be needed to properly cover ornamental pieces. Allow the primer to dry between coats.
  • Paint the gate. The best product to apply to wrought iron gates is a high-gloss alkyd paint. Opt for a colour that complements your home’s facade and landscaping. For this step, it’s better to use a roller than a spray gun, as it’ll apply a thicker coat. Make sure the paint gets into every crevice, using a small brush as needed.

Keep in mind that it’ll take two or three days for the paint to cure after you apply the final coat.

Choosing the Right Paint For Your Gate

Oil-based or alkyd paints are ideal options for wrought iron gates because they create a durable finish that repels water and is resistant to stains, scuffs, and dents. If your gate is made of galvanized metal, however, it’s best to steer clear of oil-based primers and paints. This is because these products react poorly with the zinc coating and will cause the paint to peel prematurely. Instead, opt for acrylic primers and paints specifically designed for use on galvanized surfaces.

How to Deal With Rust On A Gate

In addition to tarnishing its appearance, rust can eventually compromise the structural integrity of your gate. To prevent corrosion, paint over scratches and chips before rust sets in. Alternatively, opt for a galvanized steel or iron gate, as the zinc coating will protect the metal against corrosion.

If your gate has begun to rust, you’ll need to remove as much as possible before you do anything else. In particular, loose, flaky pieces of rust will cause paint to blister and peel. For deeply rusted areas, you can apply a special primer that converts rust into a paintable surface. If there are pits in your gate, an auto body filler product can be used to fill the holes before painting.

Finally, remember that once you start to sand your gate, it’s best to apply the primer as soon as possible to limit the amount of time the metal is exposed to oxygen and the elements.
