Here are step-by-step instructions for programming the remote controls that come with these opener brands.

HOW TO PROGRAM A STANDARD LIFTMASTER REMOTE CONTROL

A LiftMaster remote control can be programmed to activate many devices, including garage door openers, gate operators, commercial door openers, and external wired-in receivers. Here’s how you program a standard garage door opener remote made by LiftMaster.

1. Locate the "Learn" button on your garage door opener. It's on the same side as the antenna. You might have to remove the light lens to access it. The button may be either green, orange, red, purple, or yellow, and beside it is a small LED.
2. Press and release the “Learn” button.
3. Within 30 seconds of pressing the "Learn" button, press and hold the button you wish to program on the remote control for three seconds, then release.
4. The LED indicator light will turn off and/or the garage door operator lights will blink to indicate that programming was successful.

It’s as easy as that!

HOW TO PROGRAM A LIFTMASTER MAX REMOTE CONTROL

LiftMaster MAX remotes work with all 315 MHz or 390 MHz LiftMaster garage door openers manufactured since January 1993 (that is, all LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Sears Craftsman openers that have a green, orange, red, purple or yellow learn button and a yellow antenna wire). Follow these steps to program the various MAX models.

1. Locate the "Program" button on your garage door opener or keypad.
   
   On the 890MAX and 895MAX remotes, locate the "Program" button and press it using a safety pin or paper clip until the LED on the front of the remote control turns on. It will then be ready to program.
   
   On the 893MAX remote, locate the "Program" button on the back of the device located under the visor clip. Press the button to activate it.
   
   On the 877MAX keyless entry keypad, press the * and # buttons simultaneously until the lighted keys stop flashing and remain on steady.
   
   Note that when the controller is in programming mode, you need to program one button at a time.
2. Press and release the button on the remote control that you wish to program.
3. Wait for the remote control LED to stop blinking, then slowly press and release the button again. Repeat until the light bulb blinks.
   
   Don’t press the button after the light bulb blinks as this will prompt the remote to transition into a different setting, rendering it inoperable. If you do press the button, you will need to go through the steps again from the beginning.
4. Once the light bulb blinks, press any other button on the remote control.

To program other buttons on the remote control, repeat steps one to four.

HOW TO PROGRAM A GENIE REMOTE CONTROL

When you purchase a Genie ReliaG ProSeries 2028 garage door opener, you receive a remote control that has been conveniently pre-programmed to work with the opener. If you bought additional remote controls separately, or if you wish to re-program your remote, follow these steps.

Keep in mind that each programming step has a 30-second time limit for completion, after which the step needs to be restarted. A step can be restarted as many times as needed.

1. If it’s a new remote, remove the battery’s protective film by pulling it straight out.
2. Press and hold the program button for two seconds until the round LED turns blue, then release. Next the long purple LED will flash.
3. Press and release the remote button twice. The LEDs on the opener will flash, indicating it has been programmed to the remote.

That’s all there is to it. Press the button on the remote again and the garage door will open and close.
