Smart Tips for Organizing Your Seasonal Decorations

From jingle bells to dancing elves, when it comes to decorating for the holidays, many homeowners love to go all out! However, once the festivities end, sorting and storing everything can be overwhelming. Here are seven tips to help you keep your holiday decorations safely organized in your garage.

1.) Artificial tree

Artificial trees can last for decades with the proper care. However, it can be difficult to find a convenient place to store this large, bulky item after the holiday season is over. If your garage is equipped with overhead storage, this is the perfect place to tuck your tree away.

Don’t bother saving the original box. Instead, invest in a high-quality Christmas tree bag with wheels. If needed, you can make your tree a more manageable size by wrapping a belt around the branches.

Furthermore, if your tree is made up of several pieces, store the sections in a plastic bin and label each layer with a piece of duct tape to make it easy to assemble next year. Finally, make sure your tree isn’t exposed to any direct heat, as this could cause it to become discoloured or even melt.

2.) Ornaments

Most Christmas ornaments are extremely fragile. Therefore, it’s best to store them in a fabric ornament container that has several layers. Make sure to fill any empty space around the ornaments with tissue paper to prevent them from knocking together. You should also keep your ornaments out of direct sunlight to prevent them from fading.

3.) Garlands

To prevent your beaded garlands from wrapping around all your other holiday decorations, store them in leftover plastic water bottles to keep them contained.

If you have artificial pine or fir garlands, layer them in a circular motion in their original boxes or clear plastic storage bins. Leave any lights, ties, and extension cords attached to the garlands so that they’re easy to set up next year.

4.) String lights

Although you can try to shove your string lights back into their original box, it’s a better idea to repurpose a large power cord holder. This way you won’t have to untangle a wad of lights next year. Simply wind your lights neatly around the holder and hang them on the wall in your garage.

It’s also a good idea to label your lights using a piece of masking tape and a permanent marker. You can indicate how long the strand is or where it was used.

5.) Wreaths

Prevent your delicate wreaths from getting damaged or dirty by storing them in crush-proof containers. You can often find these containers at your local hardware store during the holiday season. The wreaths can then be stacked or hung on the wall using the mounting holes on the back.

Alternatively, you can hang your wreath on a wire hanger and cover it with a plastic dry-cleaning or garbage bag. Secure the bottom of the bag and wrap it around the neck of the hanger for easy storage.

6.) Hooks and hangers

Keep your decorative hooks and hangers on hand by storing them in a plastic tackle box. Plastic tackle boxes are durable, compact, and come equipped with several storage compartments for all your needs.

7.) Tablecloths and decorative linens

Keep your seasonal tablecloths and tree skirt safe from moisture, mould, moths, and dust by storing them in a hanging vacuum-storage bag. This will help you save space and ensure your linens are as fresh as they were the day you stored them.

8.) Inflatable lawn decorations

While larger than life Christmas characters are sure to make a statement, they can also be difficult to store. These decorations are an investment. Therefore, securely storing them is important. Inflatable lawn decorations should be stored in a cool, dry area like your garage to prevent them from becoming ripped or stained.

After being deflated, roll up the decorations like you would a tent and carefully place them in plastic storage bins. If you’re looking for a more budget friendly option, simply put them back in the box that they came in. However, make sure they’re kept off the ground to avoid water or pest damage.
