The Evolution of the Garage

The modern garage has come a long way from the carriage houses that first stored horses and buggies. Over the last century, innovations in convenience and style have turned the residential garage into the highlight of the home.
Early 1900s – A luxury of the rich, cars were first kept in a carriage house alongside the horses. As horses transitioned out as the transportation of choice, the carriage house underwent an upgrade of its own.
1920s-1930s – Swing-out barn doors became a thing of the past with C.G. Johnson's invention of the sectional door. This innovation allowed for the garage door to slide up and over the ceiling, saving on space and making the door easier to open. Following soon after was his invention of the automatic garage door opener in 1926.
1940s – In the wake of World War II, supplies were limited and wood garage doors gained popularity. While many garage door manufacturers put production on hold to contribute to the war effort, soldiers were returning home and starting families, which meant business was booming.
1950s-1960s – Post-war prosperity resulted in the production of more, and larger, cars. As a result, the size of residential garages increased significantly. New home construction also changed and began to focus more on convenience and style. This meant the introduction of attached garages with an entry into the house and a broader range of materials use in the manufacturing of garage doors.
1970s – More than half of new home builds included a two-car garage, and automatic garage door openers became commonplace.
1980s-1990s – Steel garage doors dominated the industry and homeowners were introduced to a new innovative combo offered by many manufacturers – the look of wood combined with the durability of steel.
2000s – Old is becoming new again. The carriage house makes a comeback with its barn-style doors and classic charm, both of which are sought after features for garage doors.
