Home to Canada’s largest aerospace technology program, the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) turned to Creative Door to provide a larger-than-life access solution for their on-site aircraft hanger.
The hanger offers engineering students in the program the opportunity to work on everything from small helicopters and Learjets to huge Boeing 737s. With aircrafts of all sizes coming in and out of the space, BCIT needed a door that could accommodate the hanger's oversized entrance - a whopping 190 feet across and 41 feet high.
Getting Creative
The first challenge that Creative Door faced was meeting the National Building Code's loads for deflection and seismic requirements. The team was tasked with designing and installing a door that can withstand heavy snowfall and shifting ground in the event of an earthquake. The size of the door also needed to be considered as it had to be large enough to accommodate the aircrafts but also practical and easy to operate.
The Door
The Creative Door team worked closely with the BCIT design team (made up of Kasian Architecture and Ledcor Construction) to find the ideal door for the job: a motorized six blade bi-part door system.
Made up of six vertical sections (six blade) with three sections on each side (bi-part), the door slides along a railing on the ground to open and close. Despite its massive size, the door is lightweight enough to be opened using only one hand.
Delivering Results
A combination of form and function, the finished product complements the building's sleek industrial style while improving the accessibility of the hanger.
With precision and collaboration, Creative Door delivered on a larger-than-life project that will benefit faculty and students at BCIT for years to come.
